Shillong, Aug 19: All sports activities will be allowed to resume from Monday, the Meghalaya government announced today.

This was announced by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong at a press conference. The loosening up of Covid restrictions will also apply to private vehicles, cinema halls and public parks, such as Lady Hydari Park, Ward’s Lake and Elephants Falls.

However, this relaxation is meant to apply only to those who are above 18 years old and are vaccinated against Covid-19.

Last month the Meghalaya government had given the go-ahead for non-contact sports as well as gyms, yoga institutes and fitness centres.

From Monday, martial arts and other sports like football and basketball will also be permitted.

Almost 50% of the targetted population in Meghalaya has received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine so far and the government is hoping to hit 70% by the end of September.

The state, though, is still reporting an average of over 300 new coronavirus cases daily at the moment, so if this opening up of activities leads to a sharp rise in cases, restrictions may have to be reimposed.
