Shillong, Jan 25: Pondicherry defeated Meghalaya by four wickets in a low scoring contest in the Senior Women’s One Day Trophy in Nagpur today.
Made to bat first after losing the toss, Meghalaya were all out for 113 in 41.1 overs, while Pondicherry chased this down after losing six wickets in 43 overs.
Meghalaya were always in the hunt in the second innings, with Ajima Sangma dismissing one of the opening batters off the very first delivery. She claimed a further two wickets to finish with figures of 3/10 in 9 very economical overs, while Debasmita Dutta did the damage at the other end to claim 3/23 in 10 overs.
Pondicherry were 13/3 at one stage and kept losing wickets until they were on 69/6 in 32.3 overs but an unbeaten seventh wicket partnership of 45 got them across the finish line.
Earlier, guest player Sejal Raut top-scored again for Meghalaya with an innings of 45 and, while there were starts from Suriti Kumari Ray (11), Anita Lodhi (13) and Dutta (14), none of them could press on, though the team were at least able to get over the 100-run mark.
Although still looking for their first win after four defeats, Meghalaya were not outplayed by Pondicherry today or Assam over the weekend (where they lost by just one run) but they will be up against a big team on Friday when they face West Bengal.
