Shillong, Jan 26: A Meghalaya contingent comprising 43 athletes will represent the state at the Khelo India Youth Games, which will begin on 31st January and run until 11th February in Bhopal.
The football team, with 20 players, makes up nearly half of the overall contingent.
There are another eight sportspersons taking part in athletics, four each in judo and swimming and two each in tennis and kayaking. Yogasana, shooting and archery are each sending one athlete.
The state’s footballers brought home Meghalaya’s only medal in last year’s Khelo India Youth Games – a bronze.
Coach Jeffrey Warlarpih said that the squad has been in training since 3rd January.
A send-off for the athletes was held in Polo Ground here yesterday, with Vibhor Aggarwal, the new Director of Sports & Youth Affairs, in attendance along with Principal Secretary Shakil P Ahammed and Meghalaya State Olympic Association Working President John F Kharshiing, among others.
