Shillong, Jul 1: The seventh edition of the East Khasi Hills Badminton Championship, organised by the East Khasi Hills District Badminton Association, concluded today at the JN Indoor Stadium here.

There were 120 shuttlers who participated in the three-day event across the various categories.

Peter T Passah, East Khasi Hills Project Director of the District Rural Development Agency, was the chief guest on the final day.

Players from this tournament will represent the district at the upcoming state championships, to be held in Nongstoin.

While the EKHDBA feels that there is no shortage of talented badminton players in the district who could go higher and farther, the association has hit a major roadblock in its efforts to bring these talents up, namely the lack of an indoor sports facility and sponsorship.

The EKHDBA’s base of U Tirot Sing Indoor Stadium at Lachumiere has been dismantled and the JN Sports Complex in Polo is also under massive renovation.

“Nonetheless, with the proactive support of Isawanda Laloo, Director of Sports & Youth Affairs, the association was able to manage and conduct the 2023 championship successfully,” a release by the EKHDBA said today.

The JN Indoor Stadium is set to be demolished in favour of a bigger structure and during the intervening period, badminton will be without a convenient home in Shillong.

The association hasn’t given up on establishing a proper indoor sports facility to conduct regular trainings and tournaments. For this it urged the state government to facilitate and provide a plot of land for the construction of an indoor sports facility. The association also appealed to businesses and corporate houses in the city to support and partner with the EKHDBA in promoting and sponsoring tournaments and potential young shuttlers.
