Shillong, Jan 23: The Wahiajer Multi Sports Complex was inaugurated today and the visuals were highly impressive.
From a dirt pitch surrounded by ordinary galleries has been created a new artificial turf football ground with synthetic athletics track, stadium seating for more than 4,000 spectators and more than enough parking.
The West Jaintia Hills complex was inaugurated by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today in the presence of Deputy Chief Ministers Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar and Minister of Sports & Youth Affairs Shakliar Warjri,
The foundation of the facility near Jowai was laid by the CM almost two years ago to the day. The estimated project cost was just shy of Rs 25 crore.
Sangma today said that the inauguration of the Pa Togan Nengminja Athletics Stadium in Tura a few days before the recently-concluded 5th Meghalaya Games shows that the government is committed to the youth of the state.
Jowai will also host the next edition of the Meghalaya Games, with Wahiajer expected to play a major part.
He also informed of an inter-constituency football tournament that will be soon announced officially.
“All 60 constituencies (of the Meghalaya Assembly) will be competing and the players will be drawn from their respective constituencies. This will allow different regions to compete, learn from each other and, more importantly, bring harmony, peace and unity among the people of the state,” he said.
