Shillong, Feb 26: The Wrestling Association of Meghalaya conducted selections for the 3rd North East Olympic Games 2024, to be held in Nagaland from 18th to 23rd March.
The selection camp was held at the Happy Red Rooster gym in Laitumkhrah here on Friday.
WAM will be sending two contingents of athletes for two different disciplines – belt wrestling and freestyle wrestling.
Belt wrestling is literally what the name says. It involves two wrestlers grappling each other’s belt and trying to pull them to the ground. Along with Greco-Roman, freestyle wrestling is one of the two styles contested at the Olympic Games.
Wrestling as a whole is fairly new to Meghalaya, with WAM only formed a few months before the second edition of the NEOG in Shillong back in 2022.
Those who appeared for the selection trials included medal winners from the 5th Meghalaya Games, which was held last month in Tura. The names of the wrestlers were not released by the association in its press release sent yesterday.
WAM is awaiting details relating to logistical support for selection, coaching trails and travel to Nagaland from the Meghalaya State Olympic Association and Department of Sports & Youth Affairs.
There are 16 disciplines scheduled to be held at the 3rd NEOG in Nagaland, with seven that were held in Shillong removed and five new ones added.
