Shillong, Jun 14: Assam Rifles Public School won two titles – U-15 and U-17 boys – at the District Level Inter School Subroto Cup football tournament for East Khasi Hills here today.

The tournament’s finals were held today at the MFA Turf at Third Ground in Polo.

In the U-15 boys’ category (which replaces the more familiar U-14 age group from years gone by), ARPS defeated Umphyrnai Presbyterian Secondary School 1-0 with a goal by Thanggoulum Vaiphei.

The U-17 boys’ final was a rematch between the two sides and here ARPS edged Umphyrnai Presbyterian 4-3 in a tiebreaker after regulation time finished 0-0.

Assam Rifles, which has a tie-up with Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools, were the U-17 champions at the district level in 2023 before winning the state title as well. Last year, Umphyrnai had won the U-14 boys’ event against ARPS.

The U-17 girls’ title, meanwhile, was won by Tyrsad Secondary School, who pipped Umpohliew Jingtip Higher Secondary School 1-0, Lapdianghun Rani providing the lone goal.

Best Player awards were handed out in each of the three categories. The winners were Ibashembha Khongsit of Tyrsad HSS in the U-17 girls, Medonbanshan Kurkalang of ARPS in the U-15 boys and Banlamkupar Rynjah of Umphyrnai Presbyterian SS in the U-17 boys.
