Shillong, Apr 8: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today felicitated the U-17 football team of Myngken Christian Higher Secondary School, Ri-Bhoi, after they secured third place at the Indo-French Football Tournament 2025.
The Meghalaya boys had defeated one French youth team before losing to the other two, which was enough to secure them third place at the 25th to 29th March tournament in Paris. Myngken Christian were chosen for this tournament after finishing as runners-up in last year’s Subroto Cup.
In his remarks, the CM lauded the achievement of the young athletes for being true ambassadors of Meghalaya and India on an international platform. “This is not just a victory in football; it is a victory for the youth of Meghalaya. Your performance has made the entire state proud and shown the world that talent from our hills can shine on any global stage,” he said. The trip cost the Meghalaya exchequer Rs 50 lakh.
Sangma also informed that Olympique Lyonnais Academy has invited the Meghalaya U-18 football team for a 20-day elite training camp in France from 5th June. “This exposure will be a massive boost for our players,” he added.
The entire 16-member team – all students from Classes 9 and 10 – were felicitated along with the support staff – Bobby L Nongbet (coach), Kitborlang Kharlukhi (assistant coach) and Carmelius Ramshon (manager).
The players were Wanpli Malang (captain), Mebankhraw Nongrum, Precious Stone Nongsiej, Mebatskhem Shylla, Bipiush G Marak, Pynshailang L Nonglait, Saindur Rynjah, Banpliebok Khongjoh, Richborn Kharpuri, Erickson Pamsad, Banganson Nongphlang, Samepaia Thangkhiew, Andrewson Marbaniang, Franky Dkhar, Alicestar Thangkhiew, Mebanlamlynti Masharing.
Others present during the felicitation included Director of Sports & Youth Affairs DD Shira, Meghalaya Football Association President Hamletson Dohling and MFA General Secretary Sunesh Syiem, among others.
