Shillong, Oct 29: The race for the Shillong Premier League 2025 has been won by Langsning but now the battle for the inaugural Shillong Super Cup 2025 is set to begin on Friday.
Organised by the Shillong Sports Association, the Super Cup brings together the Top 6 teams from the SPL 2025 – Langsning, Shillong Lajong, Mawlai, Nangkiew Irat, Rangdajied United and Sawmer – for five knockout matches.
The brand-new tournament has been introduced by the SSA this year to complement the SPL. The addition of the Super Cup gave teams in the SPL mid-table further incentive to perform well and will also provide football fans added thrills as they get to see the best six clubs fight it out in a do-or-die knockout format.
As champions and runners-up respectively of the SPL, Langsning and Shillong Lajong have received byes in the quarterfinal round and progress directly to the semis.
The two remaining quarterfinals will be held this Friday and Saturday, both kicking off at 5PM. In the first, Nangkiew Irat and Rangdajied United will meet on Friday before Mawlai take on Sawmer on Saturday.
Nangkiew Irat had drawn 1-1 with Rangdajied in the SPL on 5th September, while Mawlai had steamrolled Sawmer 6-2 on 7th August.
Nangkiew Irat were for many seasons in Rangdajied’s shadow but that changed this year when the former challenged for the title before finishing fourth. RUFC, on the other hand, struggled at the start but got their season together towards the end to finish fifth, which is still below par for a team with so much history behind them.
Mawlai, meanwhile, could have won a third SPL title in the last match of the season but were held to a draw by Rangdajied, which ensured that Langsning ended up lifting the trophy. Mawlai will be up against Sawmer, who lost heavily to every team in the Super Cup barring Rangdajied, who they pipped 1-0.
While past form is a helpful guide, football fans will know that this is a completely new tournament and surprising results could be lurking around every corner – the five Shillong Super Cup 2025 matches are sure to be unmissable!
