Shillong, Jan 30: Infrastructure work for the National Games 2027, which Meghalaya is set to host, is progressing satisfactorily, Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla said today.
He was speaking after a review meeting led by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar.
“We have briefed him on all aspects – infrastructure, accommodation and the disciplines to be held in different parts of the state. He was happy with the presentation,” Shylla said, adding that progress on infrastructure projects is going well, with venues like the JN Sports Complex in Shillong and PA Sangma Stadium in Tura nearing completion.
With little more than a year to go, though, the budget estimate for the Games is still being finalised, the minister said. “As of now I cannot tell you (about the budget) because there are lots of things going on… But we will definitely come up with the budget estimates,” Shylla stated.
Meanwhile, regarding accommodation, there may not be a need for a dedicated Games Village as the government may use existing hotels and homestays to house athletes during the event.
Speaking separately, Dhar said that the government will be repairing roads in Shillong to the tune of Rs 40 crore ahead of the Games. Painting of walls and railings, repairs to footpaths and campaigns to promote cleanliness will also be undertaken by the government ahead of the national sporting event.
