Shillong, Apr 2: Meghalaya won its sixth medal at the 1st Khelo India Tribal Games in Chhattisgarh today, with Balarisha Thyrniang taking bronze in the women’s 10000m (ie 10km) race.
Hers is the third medal that Meghalaya has won in athletics at the Games. She finished the final in a time of 42 minutes, 29.41 seconds.
All of Meghalaya’s six medals have been bronze, with five of the six medallists being women.
Yesterday Bethlyne G Makri came third in the women’s 10000m race walk.
Before that, Juh Pa U Juh Nongtdu clinched a bronze medal in the men’s 60kg Greco-Roman category in the wrestling events, while Melibad Kro was third in the women’s shot put in athletics.
Verem Gedaliah Nongsiej also earned a bronze in the women’s 50m freestyle swimming and Larityngkai Lawriniang in the women’s weightlifting 53kg category.
Although the number of medals is higher than several other states, because they are all bronze Meghalaya is a lowly 24th out of 25 states and territories in the medals table, according to the official website.
The Games are set to conclude on Friday.
