Shillong, Jul 14: Meghalaya native Lionel Daryl Rymmei is one of five goalkeepers being considered for the Indian national U-20 men’s squad for August’s SAFF U-20 Championship in Nepal.
Lionel is part of the ongoing camp for 36 probables in Goa, under head coach Ranjan Chaudhuri, which began at the end of June.
The SAFF tournament will run from 18th to 28th August in Kathmandu. India are placed in Group B with Maldives and Bhutan, while Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are in Group A.
Once the SAFF campaign is over, the squad will continue to train in Goa for the 2025 AFC U-20 Asian Cup Qualifiers to be played in September 2024 in Laos. India are clubbed with Iran, Mongolia and Laos in Group G.
Lionel is currently an FC Goa player. He has previously played for the U-19 Indian team and also for the Meghalaya state team at the National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy earlier this year and last year’s 37th National Games.
