Shillong, Aug 20: Meghalaya didn’t have to play in the U-15 boys’ Subroto Cup in Bangalore today after their opponents, Madhya Pradesh, were disqualified due to age fraud.
MP is one of five teams that have been sanctioned, the others being Assam, Manipur, Bihar and Maharashtra.
The teams had all fielded overaged players, which was confirmed by a skeletal age estimation test. The matches played by these teams on the first day yesterday were declared null and void.
Although embarrassing, this is a fairly regular occurrence in the Subroto Cup, with 16 teams being disqualified last year.
Meghalaya, in Group B, had cruised to a 6-0 victory yesterday against Sri Lanka and will play the International Schools Sports Organisation (ISSO) on Thursday at 2PM.
