Shillong, Aug 29: Reactions have been coming in from around the state after Meghalaya, represented by Nongjri Presbyterian Secondary School of Ri-Bhoi, won the U-15 boys’ Subroto Cup football tournament title in Bangalore yesterday.

Although he’s been seriously ill over the last few days, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma tweeted, “Meghalaya U-15 boys have just won the Subroto IFT (International Football Tournament) in Bengaluru. Boys from Nongjri Presbyterian School, Ri-Bhoi defeated UP (Uttar Pradesh) boys 3-0. Sports scenario in the state can only get better and the government is fully committed with its various interventions and investments…”

Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Shakliar Warjri was “absolute thrilled” by the news.

“Your 3-0 win over Major Dhyanchand Sports College, Uttar Pradesh, is a testament to your exceptional skill, dedication, and teamwork. As the Sports Minister, it’s heartening to see our young athletes excel on the international stage. You’ve made Meghalaya proud and inspired a generation of footballers. I applaud the entire team, coaches, and support staff for this remarkable achievement. Keep shining and making India proud!”

His cabinet colleague Ampareen Lyngdoh also took to social media to say something very similar, “Congratulations to Nongjri Presbyterian Secondary School, Nongjri! … With a decisive 3-0 victory over Major Dhyanchand Sports College, Uttar Pradesh, your outstanding performance on the field has truly made us proud. This win is a testament to your hard work, dedication, and teamwork. Your triumph not only highlights your exceptional skills but also sets a remarkable example for aspiring young footballers everywhere. Hats off to the entire team, coaches, and support staff for this incredible achievement. Here’s to many more successes in the future!”

Mawhati MLA and MDC Charles Marngar, who also serves as the President of the managing committee of Nongjri Presbyterian, expressed immense joy after triumph. He congratulated the team for bringing honour to the school and Ri-Bhoi.

This Meghalaya team came under the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs but the Meghalaya Football Association also heartily congratulated the boys.

“The Meghalaya Football Association extend our warmest congratulations to Team Meghalaya represented by Nongjri Presbyterian Secondary School for being crowned champions of the U15 International Subroto Cup 2024,” MFA President Hamletson Dohling said. “This remarkable achievement stands as a testament to the dedication, skill, and hard work of the players and coaching staff.
