Shillong, Oct 9: Meghalaya won a total of four medals at the 35th East Zone Junior Athletics Championship, which concluded today in Bhubaneshwar.
The state bagged one gold, two silver and one bronze.
The gold medal was in U-20 4x400m mixed relay. The team of Donbok Shabong, Renaldi Dhar, Bethylene G Makri and Damika R Lyngdoh finished in a time of 3 minutes, 48.45 seconds.
Silver was claimed by Rikangku D Sangma in the U-14 boys’ javelin with a distance of 52.35m and Anrisha Klein in the U-20 women’s high jump by clearing 1.53m.
Rinalis Ingti, meanwhile, took bronze in the U-20 women’s high jump by clearing 1.50m.
Incidentally, all four U-20 Meghalaya women won a medal each at these championships.
The Meghalaya Athletics Association had sent a 31-member contingent to the 7th to 9th October event. Today, the MAA’s General Secretary Finely L Pariat said, “We are so proud of our athletes. Despite the fact that we had only few days of preparation, they still managed to win medals for the state and many achieved personal bests.”
The MAA also thanked the coaches for their hard work and the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs for its support.
