Shillong, Apr 2: Meghalaya won their first gold medals at the 1st Khelo India Tribal Games in Chhattisgarh today, with both coming in compound archery.

The women’s team comprising Kate Diamond Lyngdoh, Nakibansharai Khonghat and Stracy M Sangma and the men’s trio of Phrangkupar Kharjahrin, Banwanbor Marwein and Donkupar L Shadap each won a gold medal.

This ends Meghalaya’s wait for the yellow metal. The state won six medals before the twin gold, all of which were bronze.

Earlier today, Balarisha Thyrniang took bronze in the women’s 10000m (ie 10km) race. Two other bronze were also won in athletics on previous days – Bethlyne G Makri in the women’s 10000m race walk and Melibad Kro in the women’s shot put.

Verem Gedaliah Nongsiej also earned a bronze in the women’s 50m freestyle swimming and Larityngkai Lawriniang in the women’s weightlifting 53kg category, while Juh Pa U Juh Nongtdu clinched a bronze in the men’s 60kg Greco-Roman wrestling.

The addition of two gold medals has lifted Meghalaya up to 12th in the medals table at the time of filing this report. Meghalaya are fourth among North East states, behind Arunachal Pradesh (6 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze), Assam (5G, 14S, 12B) and Mizoram (4G, 5S, 3B).

The Games are set to conclude on Friday.
