Shillong, Sep 22: Meghalaya picked up their first two medals at the 37th East Zone Junior Athletics Championship 2026 today, with a gold won by Tusame N Marak (pictured left) and a silver for Wankyrmen L Mawphlang (right).
Tusame cleared a height of 1.51 metres in the U-18 women’s high jump on the opening day of the event to bag gold. Last year she won a bronze at the same championship in the U-18 girls’ javelin.
Wankyrmen bagged his medal first today, after he finished second in the 5000m U-20 men’s race. He completed the course in 15 minutes 42.94 seconds. Earlier this month, Wankyrmen had won the 18–39 men’s category of the 10km race at the Sohra International Half Marathon.
The three-day regional championship is being held in Patna this year. The Meghalaya Athletics Association has sent a contingent comprising 29 athletes and four officials.
