Shillong, Oct 10: Rs 300 crore has been sanctioned by the Union Ministry of Social Justice for a multi-facility stadium spread over 50 acres meant for the National Games, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said here today.
“We are grateful to the ministry for sanctioning the required funds for the stadium,” Tynsong told the press after a cabinet meeting.
The National Games are scheduled to be held by Meghalaya in 2022.
The ministry will bear the entire cost of the stadium project, while the state government will have to mobilise its own resources for a 70-acre games village.
Both the stadium and the games village will be located in the New Shillong Township, Tynsong added.
The minister further stated that the process of engaging consultants, architects and the CEO for the National Games will be completed by November.
Massive infrastructure is required to hold the Games in Meghalaya and has to be completed one year before the event. With time in short supply the question remains whether it is truly possible for Meghalaya to complete the necessary constructions in the short space of time given that the JN Sports Complex here took two decades to build.
