Shillong, Apr 14: Meghalaya were knocked out of contention for a place in the semifinals of the Santosh Trophy final round after being roundly defeated by Services 5-0 in their Group A match in Ludhiana today.
Meghalaya suffered a blow a quarter of the way through the contest when goalkeeper Kenio Lyngkhoi was sent off for an infraction, which reduced the side to 10 men.
The goals then followed, with Services scoring three in the remaining minutes of the first half. Two more came in the second 45 minutes, with Meghalaya unable to find an answer against the jawans.
Services are now through to the semis with 10 points. Today’s loss means that Meghalaya, who have three points from three games, cannot mathematically make it into the top two of Group A, even if they beat Goa in their final fixture on Tuesday. Today evening Goa also booked their place in the last-four after beating Odisha 2-1. The Goans now have seven points.
