Shillong, Dec 8: Straight after Meghalaya won the Sub-Junior National Football Championship, the Youth Development Cell of the Meghalaya Football Association has to now prepare a team for the Junior National Football Championship for the Dr BC Roy Trophy (Tier 1), which Shillong will host early next year.
“After we worked so hard to build the sub-junior team that brought honour to our state, now we have to look at choosing players for the Junior Nationals where there will be 16 teams from around India, of which Meghalaya will be one,” Youth Development Cell Chairman Sunesh Syiem said in a press release today.
The Junior National Football Championship (Tier 1) will likely be held in January-February 2020.
As in the process used to select the sub-junior team, the YDC has conducted a three-phase selection, with trials for children from the various district sports associations in Khasi-Jaintia Hills, Garo Hills and for those belonging to academies.
“Now in one or two days we will organise the final selection trials for all those players that we chose during the three phases,” Syiem said.
In September Meghalaya, represented by H Elias Higher Secondary School, won the U-17 boys’ Subroto Cup title. Responsibility for that team lay with the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, but it was led by coach Bobby Lyngdoh Nongbet, who is also a member of the MFA’s YDC.
