Shillong, Mar 1: The 6th Meghalaya State Shooting Championship 2021 came to a close yesterday, with 25 shooters participating.
The events comprised 10m air rifle (men, women and mixed team), 50m rifle prone (men), 10m air pistol (men, women and youth) and 25m pistol (women).
Prior to yesterday’s prize distribution, I Mawthoh, branch head of North East Small Finance Bank, handed over a cheque of Rs 7-plus lakhs for the purchase of one small bore sports rifle and accessories to the Shooting Association of Meghalaya.
Commissioner of Sports & Youth Affairs and chief guest, D Vijay Kumar, congratulated SAM for having successfully conducted the championship despite the difficult situation brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Kumar added that the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs is on track in preparing infrastructure required for the National Games 2022, which Meghalaya is meant to host. He also thanked North East Small Finance Bank for supporting SAM in organising the tournament.
SAM President John F Kharshiing thanked the officials of the 58 Gorkha Training Centre for having allowed the athletes to conduct their training and championship at the short range in Madanrting. He also expressed relief that the athletes’ parents came forward after the lockdown to kickstart shooting and congratulated all the winners and the office bearers who made the championship a success.
