Shillong, Jan 21: The Meghalaya Cricket Association today commemorated Meghalaya’s 50th anniversary of statehood in a special way by organising a voluntary blood donation drive in four districts of the state in collaboration with the State Blood Transfusion Council, Regional Blood Bank, Lawmali, licensed blood banks, the Civil Hospitals in Nongpoh, Jowai and Tura and Ka Ai Jingim Organisation.
MCA officials and players donated blood and an awareness programme was held before the blood donation camp.
The camps were attended by MCA Honorary Secretary Gideon Kharkongor, Honorary Treasurer Dhrubajyoti Thakuria, Joint Secretary Chiang Shira, Ri-Bhoi District Cricket Association President Rayonald Kharkamni, All Jaintia Cricket Association President Eddystone Shylla, Armstrong Marak, Dr C Budnah (in charge of the Shillong blood bank), Dr W Nongpiur (Nongpoh), Dr P Shylla (Jowai), Dr SK Marak, Dr Tami G Momin, Dr Dimpu R Marak (Tura).
Altogether more than 100 attended the camps today. A few donors expressed satisfaction on donating for the first time. Polly Mawroh, a member of the senior women’s team, was hesitant initially, being a first-timer, but, after the awareness and the counselling, was more convinced of the safety measures taken by the blood bank. Akash K Choudhury, a member of the senior men’s team, said, “On this auspicious day of statehood I can gift my blood to save lives and nothing is more satisfying than this.”
The MCA will continue with its blood donation camp on 25th January in Shillong.
