Shillong, May 27: Mawlai won the final of the Shillong Sports Association’s maiden Women’s League 2-1 in extra time against Laitkor at Third Ground, Polo, here today.
All three goals of the hugely entertaining match were scored in extra time after the hour of regulation time ended 0-0.
Both of Mawlai’s goals were scored via headers taken from corner kicks on either side of the break in extra time; the first was scored by Ibashisha Khongwet and the second by Bahunlang Synrem. On both occasions Marbarin Nongrum was the corner kick taker.
However, if that suggested that the match was done, Ribahunshisha Kharshiing responded a minute later with a stunner of a long-range effort that beat the goalkeeper to give Laitkor some hope of a comeback, though their efforts were ultimately in vain.
As champions, Mawlai received Rs 30,000 and Laitkor took home Rs 18,000. The medals, trophies and cheques were distributed by SSA Working President K Kurbah, Vice-President Robert Dkhar, General Secretary SS Rapthap and Women’s Football Secretary Freddy Kharpran.
