Shillong, July 20: The third edition of the Sohra International Half Marathon 2024 will take place on 21st September with a record number of runners anticipated for this year’s event.
Recognised by the Athletics Federation of India and World Athletics, the event is being organised jointly by the Meghalaya Athletics Association and Meghalaya State Olympic Association in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs.
Speaking to reporters here yesterday, MSOA Working President John F Kharshiing informed that the last date of entry for runners has been fixed for 10th September.
There are a number of categories for participants – 21km Elite Open (above 18 years men and women), 21km Open (above 18 years), 10km Open (40 to 50 years), 10km Open (50 to 60 years), 10km Veteran (above 60 years) and a 5km Run for Fun (male and female).
Registration fees for the 21km races is Rs 1,000, for the 10km races Rs 200 and entry is free for the Run for Fun.
Sports & Youth Affairs Director DD Shira informed that the Tourism Department and other government departments will be fully involved in conducting this year’s event, which has been allocated Rs 2.3 crore by Sports & Youth Affairs.
Meanwhile, MSOA General Secretary Finely L Pariat informed that the route for this year’s event will be the same as the previous edition. The race will start from Laitsohpliah (6km ahead of Mawkdok bridge) and end at Mawsmai (Nohsngithiang Falls viewpoint).
However, prize money for the 21km elite race has been increased from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.50 lakh for the winner and the total prize money this year is Rs 40.60 lakh. There will also be special prizes for runners above 50 years who finish the 21km race.
The open 21km and 10km races are for local, national and international runners. Participants cannot register for more than one event, Pariat cautioned. He also informed that t-shirts and bib numbers will be distributed on 19th and 20th September at the JN Stadium, Polo.
