Shillong, Jul 19: Brilliant news came in late last night with the announcement from the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association that two of its karatekas won medals at the 10th Cadet, Junior, U-21 and Senior South Asian Karate Championship 2026.

Daniel Dabiangbha Warjri (pictured left) won a gold medal in the Boys’ Junior Individual Kumite (-68kg) category, while Gideon Tympuin (right) took bronze in the Men’s U-21 Individual Kata event.

The championship, being held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, will conclude today.

AMKA expressed tremendous joy at the two men’s success. This adds to the consistent levels of top tier performance by the association’s karatekas in regional, national and (increasingly) international events.

Meghalaya’s two karatekas were selected on the back of their performances earlier this year. Gideon won a gold medal for Meghalaya at the 5th KIO Senior & U-21 National Karate Championship 2026 in New Delhi in February-March, while Daniel claimed silver in the individual kumite junior -68kg category of the 5th KIO Sub-Junior, Cadet & Junior National Karate Championship 2026, held in Dehradun in June.

Their success in Bangladesh follows on from last year’s bronze earned by Kynjailin Lyngdoh Mawnai at the same championship in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Going back further, Wandahunshisha Mawblei won gold when the championship was previously held in Dhaka in November 2019.
