Shillong, May 26: The Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) will, along with the rest of the world, celebrate Olympic Day on 23rd June in Shillong with a wide variety of events.
The theme is ‘Move, Learn, Discover’ and events have been picked to match the theme’s component parts.
In an emailed press release sent yesterday by MSOA General Secretary Chiranjib Choudhury, the association said that it plans to host a 10km Shillong Run around parts of the city, a ‘Run for Fun’ meant for the U-16s and senior citizens. These races are to begin at 7AM and 7:30AM respectively with the State Central Library grounds acting as the start/finish line.
A self-defence demonstration by karate, taekwondo and wushu experts for female students will be held at the State Central Library at 11AM. A fencing and sport climbing display will also be put on.
No mention was made in the press release about whether Olympic Day events will be held anywhere else in the state.
Thirty students from 20 Shillong schools will take part in the programme, but entries will be open to all from 1st June to 21st June on a first-come-first-served basis. Those interested can register at the MSOA office in Lower Lachumiere between 4PM and 7PM on those days.
Olympic Day marks the birth of the International Olympic Association, which was founded on 23rd June 1894. The special day, however, only came to be celebrated as Olympic Day from 1948 onwards.
