Shillong, Sep 19: A rising star in kickboxing from the lesser know locality of Dong Ktieh, Nongrah, Shillong, Shaiborlang Lyngdoh Mawphlang, is eyeing gold at the World Kickboxing Championship 2018, to be held in Egypt next month.
Shaiborlang, the 12-year-old son of Aiom Ksiar Lyngdoh Mawphlang and Aibok Nongkynrih, is a Class 7 student of Laitumkhrah Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, Shillong, and is presently undergoing rigorous training under the supervision of coach and All Meghalaya Kickboxing Association President Samuel Hashah.
Shaiborlang will compete in the sub-junior point five category along with his compatriot Johny Ryntathiang in the senior category at the prestigious World Kickboxing Championship from the 13th to 18th October.
Earlier, Shaiborlang made his national debut when he managed to return home with a gold medal at the 24th senior and 23rd sub-junior events of the IAKO National Kickboxing Championship 2018, organised by the Kickboxing Association of Goa. Before this, he also won the gold medal in the semi-contact event in the 42kg category at the 3rd North East Kickboxing Championship 2018, organised by the Kickboxing Association of Bodoland Territorial Council, Kokrajhar, in association with State Kickboxing Association of Assam and North East Kickboxing Association. The championship was held from the 12th to 15th July this year.
Nongthymmai MLA Charles Pyngrope has assured of his complete support to the rising sports star and his family. Pyngrope wished Shaiborlang a successful career and said his win the international sports event will be a moment of pride for Meghalaya. Meanwhile, the President of the Seng Samla Dong Ktieh, Nongrah, Ksanbok Nongkynrih, has extended his support to Shaiborlang and said his success will be a proud moment for the locality, state and country.
