Shillong, Jan 21: Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh formally inaugurated the National Games Secretariat at the JN Sports Complex here today.
Meghalaya are scheduled to host the National Games in 2022, the 50th year since the state’s creation and 75th for independent India.
Lyngdoh unveiled the plaque and cut the ribbon on the new four-storey building in the presence of officials from the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs and Meghalaya State Olympic Association, among others.
He said that the building was dedicated to the people of Meghalaya.
However, the building was, reportedly, not meant to be for the National Games, but was planned as a hostel for visiting athletes – like for when sportspersons from outlying districts come to take part in tournaments in Shillong – though TSR can’t confirm this.
A source told TSR that the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs also intends to shift its offices into the new building. Its current offices are in a wing of the nearby JN Stadium.
