Shillong, Jul 2: Nangkiew Irat put a real dent in Mawkhar’s hopes of qualifying for the final of the U-18 Shillong Premier League with a 3-2 victory at Third Ground, Polo, today.
Four goals were scored in the first 22 minutes, with Nangkiew rushing into a two-goal lead thanks to Shano Tariang (7′) and Albert Nongsiej (8′). Tariang would score again in the 20th minute before Mawkhar finally got their act together and pulled one back two minutes later through Arlangky Nongsiej (22′).
Charles Lyngdoh then got Mawkhar to within touching distance with a goal in the 70th, but Nangkiew soldiered on and held their narrow lead for victory.
Third-placed Mawkhar now have just one game remaining – a massive one against league leaders Shillong Lajong on Monday. Nangkiew, meanwhile, have jumped up a place thanks to this win, moving up from sixth to fifth. They are now tied with Nongrim Hills on 14 points, but have a better goal difference (+6 to +1).
Tomorrow, at Third Ground, Ryntih will take on defending champions Langsning, while at the JN Stadium bottom sides Laban and Lawsohtun will go up against each other. Both matches will begin at 3:45PM.
