Shillong, Jun 19: The Wrestling Association of Meghalaya was formed on 17th June in a meeting of sports enthusiasts and sports officials from six districts.
WAM has adopted a constitution in compliance with the Wrestling Federation of India and will be based in Shillong. It will now seek formal affiliation with the WFI, Meghalaya State Olympic Association and Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs.
WAM has also decided to explore the possibility of conducting training and coaching camps at the earliest, given the number of athletes expressing interest in the sport across the state, with inputs and guidance from the WFI.
John F Kharshiing, the MSOA Working President, was elected president of WAM at the meeting. Two Vice-Presidents (Ralden Shabong and Coverfield Marngar) were also elected as well as a General Secretary (Sunny P Dkhar), two Joint Secretaries (Rissanwell Lajong and Reggiful Thongni), Treasurer (Johnny Nongrum) and 11 executive members (Khrawpyrkhat Rashir, Androney Wahlang, Bines Sohshang, Laitbha Wahlang, Kynsai John Nongsiang, Chesterwell Kharbani, Dipulin Marak, Rangdajied Kharumnuid, Sambormi Lyngdoh, Donbestar Syiemlieh and Cores Marwein).
The meeting also discussed possibilities of participating in the upcoming North East Olympic Games, which are scheduled to be held in Shillong, as a means to provide an opportunity to WAM to tap the hidden talents in the sport.
