Shillong, Oct 18: Meghalaya’s girls finished on top of the girls’ division at the North East zonals of the 72nd Junior National Basketball Championship 2022, with Mizoram taking the boys’ title.

This was the first time that the national tournament had been organised into a zonal round, with the top three states from each category to play in the main round of the nationals in December in Bangalore.

The Meghalaya Basketball Association held the zonals at the NEIGRIHMS indoor basketball court. The hosts plus Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram took part in the 14th to 17th October tournament.

Organised according to a purely round-robin format, Mizoram, Manipur and Assam qualified for Bangalore among the boys’ teams and Meghalaya, Assam and Nagaland from the girls’.

Last day results yesterday saw Manipur and Mizoram cruise to victory over Arunachal Pradesh 95-40 and Nagaland 76-30 respectively. Assam and Meghalaya were then involved in a closer fight but the former defeated the hosts 76-61.

In the girls’ competition, Meghalaya edged Assam by 3 points, 59 to 56.
