Shillong, Jun 4: The Laban SC Table Tennis Academy dominated the 2nd Meghalaya Open Table Tennis Cash Prize Tournament, which concluded yesterday.
The two-day tournament was organised by the academy itself and witnessed intense competition among participants across the various age categories.
Laban SC’s TT Academy (LSCTTA) bagged a haul of seven gold medals and three silver.
In the U-15 boys’ singles final, Debobrata Paul defeated Sagnik Choudhury (both from LSCTTA) 3-0.
The U-19 boys’ singles title match saw Kapil Biswakarma (LSCTTA) emerge as the winner after a thrilling match against Labeeb Faisel Ahmed, with the final score of 4-3 reflecting the intense competition and determination displayed by both players.
Another LSCTTA player, Suranjit Dey, won the men’s singles final 4-1 against Sandeep Kumar. The women’s singles event was won by Tanushree Dasgupta (LSCTTA), who secured first place with a 4-0 victory over Diva Tang.
In the veterans’ singles category, Amit Gupta (LSCTTA) showcased his experience and skill, emerging as the winner in a hard-fought battle against Santanu Ghosh 3-1.
Dey teamed up with Kumar for the men’s doubles and beat Ghosh and Rituraj Shabong 3-0 for the title. The veterans’ doubles final was won by Bishnu Joshi and Ghosh, who triumphed over the duo of Ranjan Deb and Biswajit Das Gupta 3-1.
The standout performer of the tournament was U-15 boys’ singles champion Paul, who displayed exceptional talent and determination throughout. He was awarded the title of Most Promising Player for his achievements.
The tournament also recognised the outstanding contributions of the late BC Bania, the godfather and pioneer of table tennis in Meghalaya. Wastenot Shabong, Bania’s widow, sponsored the men’s and women’s singles trophies.
Cash prizes were awarded to the winners and runners-up across all categories, with the men’s and women’s singles champions taking home the biggest prize purses of Rs 10,000 each.
