Shillong, Sep 4: There were contrasting starts for the Meghalaya girls’ and boys’ teams in their respective Sub-Junior National Football Championship campaigns yesterday.

While the girls’ team were victorious over Gujarat, winning 2-0 in Amritsar, the boys lost 5-1 to Uttar Pradesh in Malda, West Bengal.

Bonifilia Shullai netted Meghalaya’s opening goal in Group C against Gujarat in the 26th minute and the Iaikyntiewlang Nongkynrih-coached side then doubled the lead in the 73rd through Wanrihun Kharnaior, who was named Player of the Match. Meghalaya will next take on Assam on Tuesday.

In the other game, the Meghalaya boys, who won the tournament in 2019, went down heavily to Uttar Pradesh in Group A. Nothing more than the score was provided on the All India Football Federation website at the time of filing this report.

However, as their group only contains three teams (Sports Authority of India having dropped out), and with only the best side progressing to the semifinals, Meghalaya have a difficult task ahead with only Karnataka left to face.
