Shillong, Oct 12: The 6th Megha Kayak Festival officially kicked off today at the Shillong White Water village in Umtham, Ri-Bhoi.
It is organised by the Ri-Bhoi Water Sports and Tourism Corporation Society and sponsored by the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs in collaboration with the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association.
The three-day event, set to be a thrilling experience for the participants and spectators, will conclude on Saturday.
This year, the festival takes pride in its rich diversity, with a wide group of participants, including an impressive squad of 25 international kayakers hailing Sri Lanka, Switzerland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the USA, Czech Republic, Australia, Norway, Chile, Mexico, Germany and France, along with eight talented kayakers from Meghalaya and one from Arunachal Pradesh.
Meghalaya’s budding kayakers are taking part in the intermediate category and they were able to showcase their skill and passion today.
For those with a penchant for adventure and a love of speed, the festival offers two categories: the Down River Sprint and the Canoe Slalom Cross. The Umtrew is a challenging course and the event is a celebration of sportsmanship, shared enthusiasm for kayaking and the power of nature.
