Shillong, Jul 11: The state cabinet yesterday approved a proposal to double the cash component of the Kiang Nangbah Award for sports and other Meghalaya Day awards.
The awards are conferred every year on Republic Day, 26th January, which falls five days after Meghalaya Day.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed that recipients will now receive Rs 2 lakh up from Rs 1 lakh. The figure had last been revised in 2013.
The CM also informed that applications (for those seeking the awards for themselves) and recommendations for the awards will be made online, like is done for the Padma Shri and other national awards. Sangma didn’t mention what website will be used for this process but this will probably be revealed when the government calls for applications/recommendations for 2025.
Footballer Phrangki Buam (pictured left) is the most recent recipient of the Kiang Nangbah Award, for 2024. The two previous recipients were also footballers – Klingson Marak (a blind footballer) in 2023 and Halen Nongtdu in 2022.
