Shillong, Aug 6: Two climbers from the Meghalaya Sport Climbing & Mountaineering Association are undergoing the route setters and belayers training course in Itanagar.

Balawanhabor Rynjah, a student from Sankardev College, and Ricky Rani from Lad Mawphlang are attending the training, which is being organised by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation North East Zone in collaboration with Arunachal Pradesh’s Department of Sports, Tourism and Youth Affairs from 3rd to 7th August.

MeSCMA informed that the two trainees have been financed by Meghalaya’s Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs.

A route setter is someone who designs artificial rock climbing wall routes, combining technical know-how with artistic representation of real rock climbing moves.

A belayer provides safety to a climber. By using ropes connecting the two, the belayer can prevent a climber from having a disastrous fall if things go wrong.

The training programme includes comprehensive hands-on sessions where individuals are mastering the skills required for safe and efficient route setting and belaying.
