Shillong, Oct 15: Fragrancy Riwan (pictured front row centre) scored five goals in the Senior Women’s National Football Championship on Sunday but for Delhi, not Meghalaya.
Fragrancy, Sanfida Nongrum (front row far right) and goalkeeper Ribansi Jamu (back row far left) hail from Meghalaya but now play their state-level football for Delhi as all three represent Garhwal United FC. Sanfida and Fragrancy represented Delhi last year too.
Delhi are in Group D of the prelims of the Senior Women’s NFC and blazed past tiny Andaman & Nicobar Islands yesterday 21-0. Fragrancy (4’, 9’, 28’, 45+3’, 52’) started things off with the first goal in the fourth minute and then added another four to her name.
The three Meghalaya girls played the full 90 minutes.
Delhi will next take on Pondicherry today.
The eight group winners from the preliminary stage will join Manipur and Haryana (defending champions and last year’s runners-up respectively) in the final round where they will be split into two groups of five teams. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semifinals.
Meghalaya, incidentally, aren’t taking part this year.
