Shillong, Jan 11: Nongkseh were involved in a heated and close pre-quarterfinal of the 11th All India Chief Minister’s Gold Cup International Football Tournament in Sikkim today after a 1-0 win against Eastern Railway of Kolkata.

Nongkseh had won their opening match on 7th January against Gangtok Himalayan SC.

Hardy Cliff Nongbri scored the only goal today, which came via a penalty but he missed the second half after getting elbowed in the face. The skipper needed a couple of stitches to his lip but was discharged afterwards.

The penalty came about after Khrawkupar Jana was fouled inside the box early on in the match.

Despite losing Hardy, Nongkseh returned strongly in the second half, pressing high and creating several chances, though they failed to add to their tally.

Eastern Railway continued to rely on physical play, which backfired as they were reduced to nine men after receiving two red cards.

Nongkseh held firm to seal the narrow win and advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face former I-League side NEROCA of Manipur on 16th January.

Nongkseh’s Shano Tariang was adjudged Player of the Match today.
