Shillong, Jun 26: The Meghalaya Triathlon Association was formally incorporated on 15th June.
The triathlon is a gruelling multi-sport race comprising swimming, cycling and running. The distances are not short, with the swimming section typically being 750m, cycling 20km and running 5km.
The association is led by long-distance runner Rephica Pde as President, supported by Shivani Pde as General Secretary, Shaikupar Kharshiing, Badon Sing Tham and James Perry.
The MTA has begun holding trials for interested athletes.
However, the Meghalaya State Olympic Association, has said (at least privately to TSR) that the formation of the MTA comes very late in the day, at least when it comes to participation in the 39th National Games, which are scheduled to be held in Meghalaya next year.
Although the triathlon is a recognised part of the National Games and Olympics, state associations should have been running for several years before receiving affiliation with the MSOA, an official said. Many such associations have popped up in recent times covering all manner of disciplines that weren’t represented in Meghalaya.
On the other hand, there are associations that have existed for years but whose activities have been minimal to non-existent at best – think fencing and hockey to name but two.
