Shillong, Oct 3: Sports associations, athletes and officials took part in the ‘plogging’ event that was held here yesterday to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
The 2km plog, which combines picking up litter and jogging, was conducted by the Meghalaya State Olympic Association and East Khasi Hills district administration. It ran from Shillong Golf Course to State Central Library, starting at 6:30AM.
Affiliated associations of the MSOA, including the football, badminton, archery, golf, table tennis, karate and athletics bodies, took part, along with the Sports Authority of India and Meghalaya Baby League.
The participants picked up enough litter to fill dozens of biodegradable garbage bags. This is evidence that the event was an overall success but also an appalling indictment of the amount of litter in the city.
Recently the generally dirty JN Stadium has also been in focus, with supporters and officials of Umphyrnai and Ryntih football clubs conducting cleaning drives after their respective matches at the ground.
