Shillong, Jan 29: The foundation of the new Wahiajer Multi Sports Complex in West Jaintia Hills was laid today by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.
The estimated project cost is just shy of Rs 25 crore (Rs 24 crore, 97.11 lakh to be precise). It will be funded through the State Plan Scheme and Sports Authority of India’s Khelo India Infrastructure Scheme, the CM announced on social media.
The elements of this project will include the development of an artificial football turf, synthetic athletics track, spectator galleries, changing rooms and office space.
This is one of a string of sports infrastructure projects recently launched in the state. Earlier this month Sangma kicked off work on stadiums in Adokgre, North Garo Hills, and Dalu, West Garo Hills. Last month the foundation stone for an indoor stadium was laid in Jongksha, East Khasi Hills. The government also plans to spend Rs 250 crore on sports complexes in Tura and Shillong.
“The provision of sports infrastructure will hone the skills of sporting talents from the area and will encourage our youth to take up sports as a career. We will develop sports infrastructure across Meghalaya to unlock the potential of your youth in the districts,” Sangma added.
Also present on the occasion were Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh and others.
