Shillong, Jul 25: The Mizoram government has plans to organise a new pan-North East football tournament in the post-coronavirus era, it was learnt yesterday.
Sports Minister of Mizoram, Robert Romawia Royte, announced at a special general body meeting of the Mizoram Football Association in Aizawl yesterday that the invitational tournament would be known as the ‘Laldenga North East Peace Cup’.
Laldenga was a former Chief Minister of Mizoram and signed the Mizo Accord with India in 1986.
“The mega football tourney is expected to promote sports, peace and tourism in NE India,” Royte said on his Instagram handle.
Discussions on the proposed competition have taken place between Royte, the All India Football Federation and state FA.
Football in Mizoram, like in the rest of the country, remains on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.
