Shillong, Nov 15: The Indian Golf Union Shillong Junior Boys Golf Championship began today at the Shillong Golf Course. It is being organised by the IGU, Meghalaya Golf Promoters Society and Shillong Club in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Meghalaya’s statehood.
The tournament will run until 19th November. It is a national event that carries points towards the National Order of Merit for Junior Boys. This is the third time the IGU has scheduled a national event in Shillong.
Two of top juniors of the nation playing in this event are Shat Mishra and Sagar Uppal. Both will have to face stiff challenges from local favourites Siddhant Singhania and Shaurya Goenka, who have the advantage of playing on their home course. Along with the duo, Assam’s Ambarish Bora will be the third junior representing the North East at this event
Cabinet minister James Sangma is the patron for the championship and has assured full support from the state government. AL Hek MLA, an avid golfer and MGPS advisor, is the chairman for the event.
Michael Hek, MGPS Secretary, said, “Hosting of such events keeps the golf course in good shape and also contributes to the economy of the state.”
