Shillong, Mar 22: Meghalaya bagged their seventh silver and another large number of bronze medals on the penultimate day of the 3rd North East Games in Nagaland today. As of 7:30PM, Meghalaya had 2 gold, 7 silver and 36 bronze medals.
Bhalang Shadap (pictured) earned a silver medal for Meghalaya as he finished second in the men’s 67kg boxing category. Six other pugilists couldn’t progress beyond the semifinals and so came away with bronze medals. They were Sanjeev Maskut (48kg), Khrawbok Marwein (51kg), Banjop Nongkhlaw (54kg), Sunil Limbu (57kg), Ram Lyngdoh (60kg) and Riteeka Sarki (57kg), the last being the only woman among them.
The state women’s basketball team are also guaranteed a medal – either silver or gold – as they reached the final by beating Nagaland 60-45 today in the semifinals. The men’s team weren’t able to reach the semis. The final will be held tomorrow, the last day of the Games.
Taekwondo gave the state a few more bronze medals today. Honda O Hi Papang bagged one in the 80kg men’s category and Asha Sunar another in the 40kg women’s event. Later, a third bronze came through Evadahunshisha Kharmudai in the 43kg women’s weight category.
Two women freestyle wrestlers also came away with bronze medals. They were Iohtilyn Wankhar (50kg) and Mondashisha Marwein (57kg).
Another bronze was picked up in archery where the Meghalaya men’s compound team finished third by beating Sikkim 210-207. The team comprised Phermiki Salahe, Leonaldo Lyngdoh, Ernesaiborson Lyngdoh and Sumit Kumar Choudhury.
In other results, Sasha Kharbuli lost her quarterfinal in women’s singles tennis to an opponent from Assam.
