Shillong, Sep 1: Nongumlong SC and Mawryngkneng SC won contrasting matches in Group A of the Shillong Sports Association’s Third Division 2024 at First Ground, Polo, here yesterday.
Nongumlong won an entertaining contest 4-2 against Pomlakrai SC while Mawryngkneng were 1-0 victors over Nongmensong SC.
Mawryngkneng’s lone goal was by Shanlangki Marboh (36′). This had the distinction of being the 100th goal of the Third Division 2024.
Victory wasn’t enough for them to unseat Kharang SC at the top of the points table but it got them closer. Both sides are tied on points, their meeting on 23rd August ended in a draw, so goal difference is required to separate them, with Kharang leading by this measure +6 to +4.
Earlier, Nehlang Kharsahnoh gave the lead to Nongumlong (12′) but that only last a minute as Odawanmi Wahlang (13′) equalised right after. Strongwell N Shanpru then restored the lead for Nongumlong in the 20th minute and there was no looking back from then on.
In the second half Nongumlong added more goals through Brightwell Nongrang (52′) and Nehlang (69′) again before Pyrnai Sohtun (82′) reduced the margin for Pomlakrai late in the day.
Although they have a worse goal difference than Nongmensong (0), Pomlarai (-4) have head-to-head advantage as they had beaten Nongmensong 1-0 on 27th August and are thus placed higher in the standings.
There will be no Third Division matches until 5th August as the Second Division is set to begin on Monday.
