Shillong, Sep 20: Tynring SC secured a place in the quarterfinals of the Shillong Sports Association’s Third Division 2024 from Group D by defeating Rynjah SC 2-0 at First Ground, Polo, here today.
The other match, in Group A, saw Nongumlong SC beat Nongmensong SC 3-1. These were the last two group matches of the season.
Before today, Rynjah were second in Group D and needed to avoid defeat to progress to the quarterfinals. Tynring, meanwhile, were fourth out of five teams.
Goals on either side of half time by Commanding Swer (36′) and Jesleyroy Mylliempdah (51′) ensured that their club jumped up to first place with 7 points. This dropped Sanmer SC (6 points) to second and Rynjah (5) to third.
Earlier, Nongumlong scored via Keswell Nongneng (27′), Nehlang Kharsahnoh (66′) and Sustain Nongbsap (81′). Kevin Lyngdoh (80′) produced Nongmensong’s lone goal.
Neither side were in with a shot for the top two, but Nongumlong took third place and some pride with this win. Nongmensong finish tied with Pomlakrai SC on 6 points. Though they have a better goal difference, Pomlakrai have head-to-head advantage and are thus placed higher in the standings.
With all the group fixtures done, we should be able to tell you which eight teams have secured places in the quarterfinal round. We can for Groups A (Mawryngkneng SC and Kharang SC), B (Mawpat SC and Lumparing SC) and D (Tynring and Sanmer) but not for Group C, as the SSA has yet to make a determination. Three teams are tied on the same points there, with head-to-head (each team having one win each) and goal difference not helping (see below).
Umpling SC have scored the most goals (11), so they should go through, but Mawkriah West SC and Lawmali SC are equal even by this measure. TSR isn’t sure whether the head-to-head should be considered again (Mawkriah West beat Lawmali on 5th September) or will the issue be sorted by drawing of lots. We’ll let you know when the SSA let’s us know.
