Shillong, Sep 24: Mawpat SC had to fight past Kharang SC in a penalty shootout to win their quarterfinal fixture of the Shillong Sports Association’s Third Division 2024 at First Ground, Polo, here today.
Normal time ended 2-2 and the match went straight to a tiebreaker, which Mawpat won 4-2. (In the Third Division, if there is a tie in the quarterfinals, the game goes directly to penalties. Extra time is only introduced from the semifinals.)
The first quarterfinal was between Mawryngkneng SC and Lumparing SC, which the former won 1-0.
Mawryngkneng’s winning goal was by Iohbor Mukhim in the 67th minute. Mawryngkneng had topped Group A with an unbeaten record, while Lumparing were second in Group B.
Later, Kharang (who were second in Group A) twice took the lead only to see Mawpat (Group B winners) equalise on both occasions.
Firstborn John Marwein (21′) scored first for Kharang but half time ended 1-1 after Kardinuis Kharbangar (38′) levelled for Mawpat. Riben G Talang (72′) then got Kharang out in front again only for Dikosta Nongrum (75′) to cancel the lead a few minutes later.
Tomorrow in the third and fourth quarterfinals, Group C winners Umpling will go up against Group D runners-up Sanmer at 12:15PM, followed by Group D winners Tynring SC against Group C runners-up Mawkriah West at 3PM.
