Shillong, Oct 4: Meghalaya Police defeated Smit SC 2-1 in the last Group A match of the Shillong Sports Association’s Second Division 2024 at First Ground, Polo, here today.
MLP thus finished at the top of the group, where they were even before this game, and Smit ended third, which means that their run in the tournament comes to an end. They needed at least a draw to reach second place and progress to the semifinals.
After a goalless first half that saw each team be denied by the woodwork in the first half hour, Austin Marbaniang (46′) found the opening for the police soon after the restart and Chesterfield Nongdhar (71′) made it 2-0 with around 20 minutes still on the clock.
Smit threw everything they could at MLP but were only able to find one goal – via Rishanlang Suting (90’+2) in stoppage time.
The First Division begins tomorrow with Pohkseh SC playing Mawtawar SC at 12PM followed by Nongrah SC versus Sohryngkham SC at 2:45PM.
