Shillong, Aug 21: A two-day State Level Awareness Programme on Sport Climbing and Adventure Activities 2025 was formally inaugurated today at the Eastern Command Sport Climbing Node of 58 Gorkha Training Centre, Happy Valley here.
The event is being organised by the Meghalaya Sport Climbing & Mountaineering Association in collaboration with 58 GTC with support from the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs.
A major highlight was the introduction of a newly constructed standard climbing wall at the centre, which is designed for all three international disciplines – bouldering, lead climbing and speed climbing. This landmark facility is expected to foster awareness, inspire participation and encourage youth to embrace sport climbing as both a competitive sport and an adventurous pursuit, MeSCMA said in a press release today.
The programme drew 96 participants from 10 districts of Meghalaya. School children from the Army Public School, Happy Valley also attended the event, and all present witnessed an electrifying climbing demonstration by the Eastern Command team.
Dignitaries present at the opening ceremony were Director of Sports & Youth Affairs DD Shira, Brig Joe Sabby, Commandant of 58 GTC, and Finely Pariat, General Secretary of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association.
