Shillong, Sep 27: Karatekas from Shillong College won five of the six titles at the 13th Inter-College Karate Tournament 2026, organised by the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA), in the one day event here yesterday.
There were 30 karatekas who took part from 11 different institutions.
The tournament was organised in collaboration with the Sports Development Cell of Shillong College, which hosted the event, and was supported by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya.
This championship was also used as part of the talent scouting programme by AMKA for the 39th National Games 2027, which Meghalaya will host.
Shillong College’s Gideon Tympuin won both the men’s individual kata and men’s individual titles. First place in the men’s team kumite, however, was won by the St Anthony’s College contingent of Aventinus George Mylliem, Damebanmerbha S Blah, Samebanmerbha S Blah, Ferdinand Samkupar Rani and Jasper D Pdang.
In the women’s category, Rebeka Nongspung of Shillong College took gold in the women’s individual kata, women’s individual kumite and also won the women’s team kumite title with her college mates Larisha Kurbah, Kynjailin L Mawnai, Daphilahun Meri Wahlang and Ibadaplin Mukhim.
Shillong College were Team Champions in the men’s and women’s events, with St Anthony’s and Lady Keane College respective runners-up.
The chief guest at the opening ceremony was the East Khasi Hills District Sports Officer Damang Syngkon, who is also a multiple national and international karate medallist and Vice-President of AMKA. At the closing the chief guest was Dr (Mrs) H Diengdoh, the Vice-Principal, Academy and Student Welfare, of Shillong College.
Syngkon noted that there is a dropoff in terms of numbers from AMKA’s inter-school to inter-college tournaments, with the former drawing in hundreds of karatekas every year. “We are trying to address this and the inter-college tournament and state senior team are getting stronger. This is due to the efforts of AMKA and the state government,” Syngkon said and he recognised new national champions that are coming up, such as Gideon Tympuin, who won a gold medal in a national tournament in New Delhi in February-March and a bronze in the South Asian Championship in July.
The DSO also recognised Donboklang Lyngdoh, Technical Director of AMKA, who is now a 6th Dan black belt.
